The Battle for Number 10

A 2024 Sky News special event live from Grimsby, featuring Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer - both in the running to become the new UK Prime Minister. The show placed the main candidates vying to lead the country under scrutiny in front of a representative audience drawn from the local area and nationally. Here they went head-to-head with Beth Rigby, answering questions from the audience and pitching to voters.

Strategy

Visualising a battle between two parties was priority in this creative concept. We were keen to ensure that we demonstrated synergy but also opposing journeys. We wanted to show how both candidates were on a political race to Number 10 Downing Street, and the high intensity that comes with this. Our sting needed to be dynamic, exciting, to draw an audience in at the first hit - to show the sort of high energy that would undoubtedly be in the room.

Design

Considering the core colour palette used by Sky New’s election coverage was key for brand consistency across the board. To elevate this proposition, the line texture adds an element of sharpness and represents the journey both leaders are on during the race. This graphic device was then used cross-platform to represent graphics from both parties, with the added generic black line texture for neutral commentary. Both party textures were also cleverly combined throughout TV screen furniture.

Result

Hundreds of thousands of viewers across the country tuned in to watch The Battle for Number 10 which rigorously ran the rule over Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak, with questions from a 100 strong Grimsby audience. The design was adaptable enough to show two sides of the battle whilst also creating a dynamic space for neutral discussions - balance at it’s finest.
